A Racial Obamunami?

A disturbing Quinnipiac University poll run the week of June 9th among all likely voters of all political parties in three key “swing” states showed Barack Obama’s support among black voters is 95% in Florida and Pennsylvania and 90% in Ohio.
There are, as far as I can see, only four possible explanations for these results:
(1) Blacks believe Obama will advance their race-based causes based on his record.
(2) Something about being black, but not Obama’s race, makes blacks twice as likely as all other Americans to think Obama will be the best president for all Americans regardless of race issues. The fact that he shares the same race is just a miraculous coincidence.
(3) Blacks are voting on the basis of skin color, regardless of Obama’s record, in a racist manner.
(4) Blacks are overwhelmingly Democrats and are voting for the Democratic nominee at the same rates as other Democrats.
Let’s test these possibilities.
As for possibility number one, it’s pretty hard to name a specific, tangible advances achieved by Obama for the cause of black civil and economic rights. Can you think of any? If so, please state them in the comments section. Granted, it’s quite difficult to think of any specific policy advances achieved by John McCain, and quite possible that all things considered Obama’s record of helping blacks is significantly better than McCain’s. But 95-5 better? There’s very little evidence to support such a claim.
As for possibility number two, in the Quinnipiac poll John McCain leads Obama among all male voters in the three states by a margin of 47%-44%. What rational reason, having nothing to do with race, would make black men reject that trend and overwhelmingly support Obama as the best overall national leader. Hard to think of one, isn’t it?
As for possibility number three, just imagine what you would think if you learned that 95% of white voters were supporting McCain. Would you give serious consideration to the possibility that racism was involved then? After all, such levels of support would be totally unprecedented in all of American history. If so, and you can’t convincingly attribute the Quinnipiac result to any of the other three possibilities, you have to consider it quite possible that, ironically, Obama’s candidacy is unearthing a significant racism issue among black voters.
Finally, in regard to possibility number 4, only 82% of Florida Democrats planned to vote for Obama; just 80% of Ohio Democrats planned to do so, and just 78% of Pennsylvania Democrats. So the black percentages are far higher. Therefore, even if no blacks were registered Republican their support of Obama would still be far out of proportion to their party’s support for him — and in fact of course many blacks are registered Republican or Independent, making the pro-Obama tilt among blacks even more pronounced than it superficially appears.
I’d like to suggest that no matter what reason black Americans think they have to support Obama, doing so in this lemming-like manner is directly contrary to their interests. In fact, if Obama really cared about the black community, I’d suggest that he should advise them not to vote this way. The implications of irrationality and/or racism that inevitably go along with such voting patters will not do credit to those who struggle for racial justice or make it easier for them to achieve this. Moreover, this kind of apparently mindless support will only make Obama think he has can take the black vote for granted, and that will make him less likely to advance its interests.
Of course, one must say in the black community’s defense that it hasn’t seen the conflict between McCain and Obama play out yet. It hasn’t seen a single debate, nor has the TV campaign begun yet. Maybe when McCain starts landing blows, pointing out Obama’s total lack of executive or foreign policy experience, his miscues in organizing his campaign and his scary connections to wacko racists, the black community will revise its opinion of Obama and the numbers will begin to fall.
But I’m not optimistic. Obama won Stalin-like majorities among black voters throughout the Democratic primary season, and Hillary Clinton was attacking him them — though surely not as aggressively as the Republicans will do. Hillary beat Obama in all three of largest electoral states (California, New York and Texas) and that didn’t do a thing to undermine Obama’s black vote.
It seems that, ironically, rather than contributing to a resolution of racial issues, the Obama candidacy is actually exacerbating them. This is the tragic flaw in having a black candidate who is totally without substantial credentials — it makes it hard to rationalize overwhelming black support on grounds other than race.

They [read darker community] time and again complain about racist threat to Obama. however, the black are more racist than the whites are. they are voting for Obama only becoz he is black. yes, the blacks are more racists than white. there are so many like me who thinks no matter what Obama says but he’s lost many white people like me. I am a Republican who was so angry over the amnesty McCain and the Party were willing to give illegal aliens, that I was going to vote for Obama. For Obama, getting rid of race-based preferences would certainly be an important step forward, but he will never reach the White House if he starts pushing down that path. Right now he needs to stick with the approach that got him to this point — claims for hope and change, not only from George Bush but also from the hated Clintons of our innermost demon and their sticky-shallow-meanspirited vassals.

Obama is a man with incredible qualities. Sen. Obama could not have had a better opponent than Hillary Clinton. Obama did not run an "amazing" campaign. His campaign was of words, not actions, of promises, not concrete plans. in order to win the election all he need to do is to stop telling lie. that's all. for US ppl, it's over.
