Russia :

A Tsunami of Sports FailuresLast week Russia turned in another one of its spectacular flameouts in the world of sports.

First, Russia’s top-ranked female tennis player, Maria Sharapova (pictured, left), was blown off the court in easy straight sets in her second match at The Championships in Wimbledon by a player who had never before won a match at the tournament, was unseeded and was not ranked in the world’s top 150 players. The loss came just hours after Sharapova learned that Russia had refused her request to carry the national flag at the Beijing Olympiad opening ceremonies. The request was inexplicable coming from a person who has in the United States since she was a child, learned her game there and never spends any time in her so-called “homeland.” It was one of the most disgraceful exits from the tournament by a player who had previously won it in history, and it’s not the first time Sharapova has embarrassed herself this way at the All England Club.

A Tsunami of Sports FailuresBut Sharapova at least did better than Russia’s top-ranked male player, the infamous Nikolai Davydenko (embroiled in a match-fixing scandal), who also crashed and burned spectacularly at Wimbledon. He lost his opening match in easy straight sets to an unseeded German not ranked in the world’s top 100.

Then to make the nightmare complete, Russia’s national football team (albeit coached by a Dutchman) lost its second match of the Euro tournament to Spain even worse than it had the first encounter the week before, which had been an outright massacre. This time Russia didn’t manage to score a single goal. It was outscored by the Spanish by a devastatingly decisive margin of 7-1 over the course of the two matches.

Russia had adopted its usual strategy for motivating its football side to victory. Faced with a declining population (which is expected to halve over the course of the next century) the Putin government’s only response was to bribe parents to have more kids. In a similar manner, a Russian oligarch promised to give the football side unlimited access to expensive prostitutes if only they would eke out a win.

After beating the tiny countries of Sweden, Greece and Netherlands to earn a semi-final bid, the arrogance was flying fast and furious in Russia, as only Russians can manufacture it. Russians swarmed the streets of Moscow declaring themselves “champions” and Russian Midfielder Konstantin Zyryanov stated: “We have beaten two very strong teams, I think this improves our chances. I want to play Spain [in the semifinal]. We made lots of mistakes against Spain [in the group match] and now we have fixed them very quickly.” Ouch. Be careful what you wish for there, Konstantin.

What Russians should have done after making the semis was to say to themselves: “Gee, we don’t have a very good team yet we’ve done pretty well by hiring ourselves a foreign coach who’s dramatically changed the way we play. If we go on this way, we might be able to coach ourselves one day, and maybe even win this tournament.” Instead, Russians gave vent to a level of hubris (and, indeed, outright xenophobia) that can only flow from the sure and certain knowledge, deep inside, that you’re nowhere close to being good enough and don’t want to put forth the effort to become so.

Russian pundit Alexei Bayer has an excellent piece in the latest issue of the Moscow Times highlighting what Russia could have learned, but refuses to, from Euro 2008. Instead, Russia continues madly down the path of xenophobia and arrogance that has led to so much failure in the past.

A Tsunami of Sports FailuresMaria Sharapova is surely one of the most grotesquely overrated figures in professional sports. Take a look at her, at right, talking to the press after being summarily ejected from the French Open tournament just a few weeks ago, again by a much lower-ranked player, or at the top of this page, in both instances stripped of the power of makeup and air-brushing. Then ask yourself how well-deserved her vixen reputation is. Reflect on her record. She won the Wimbledon title a few years ago, and how did she do it? She was being routed by American Lindsey Davenport in a semi-final match when suddenly, miraculously, it started to rain and the match was stopped. When it resumed later, Davenport had lost her concentration (she would soon retire from the sport) and Sharapova claimed “victory.” What can you say about a player who spends all her time in one country then wants to carry another’s flag in the Olympics?

Sharapova is Russia in microcosm. The country seems to prefer to imagine it is winning rather than do the hard work of actually winning. Sharapova is as much an American as as Russian, probably much more so, and the coach of Russia’s football team is Dutch. Sharapova trades on air-brushed beauty rather than hard work and improvement, but that won’t sustain the sport of women’s tennis. No Russian woman who lives in Russia has ever held the number one ranking or won a grand slam title by beating a non-Russian in the finals, and no Russian woman has ever won any tournament while ranked number one. Yet, some people talk about “dominance” by Russian women in the sport. Instead of seeing a basis for hard work and improvement, Russians see only a reason to sit on laurels that don’t even really exist.

It’s the same in politics. Russians allow their dictator, Vladimir Putin, to claim credit for economic gains that have nothing to do with his polices and everything to do with the accident or rising oil prices. Instead of investing Russia’s oil windfall in building a better society, Russians allow Putin to spend it on whipping up a new cold war with the United States and seeking to reaquire imperial control over places like Ukraine and Georgia, control which was lost because the USSR behaved in an equally self-destructive manner.

Kim, it really is ridiculous how biased you are against Russia. I guess this must be something personal.

I can’t take this article seriously and I think no one should.

Aren’t you just as biased against me as you claim I am against Russia? Is it really proper for you make a personal attack on me? Is that how you show bias is bad?

Aren’t you, in fact, a gigantic hypocrite, and/or a jealous little freak?

If you think Russia did well on the sports front last week, why not give some evidence?

Dude, your ”comment” is totally without substance, contributing NOTHING to our understanding of Russia. Try to get a clue.

Hey Kim,

If you can exercise the liberty to write two dedicated articles (read: well-planned personal attacks) on a fellow member of the Instablogs Community (Rudy), you should show some courage and respect the views of others too, even if they consider you as a brainless-jotter. Check the links;

As for my reactions on this article of yours, please keep checking the main comment box below. As soon as I’m done with all my important tasks and get enough free time to waste it on a useless article as this one, I’ll definitely post my comment.

Well even I think it is too harsh if not biased. Russia reached semifinals of the Euro and you are talking as if they were knocked out in the first round. Also Spain itself has had a long history of early exits and finally they have pulled it of.
As far as Sharapova is concerned, whatever the critics say, she is the most popular tennis player. She might not be consistent...but who in woman’s circuit is?

Russia was outscored 7-1 by Spain in two matches after arrogantly saying it would win and spouting much arrogant rhetoric. It reached the semifinals by beating much smaller countries and then proved it could not compete seriously with the big boys.

Popular? It’s not about being popular it’s about being GOOD and WINNING. Tennis is not a beauty pageant, it’s about playing great games that attract spectators for the quality of sport shown. That’s the whole point of this post, that Russians favor ILLUSION over SUBSTANCE and this prevents them from achieving real progress, just as it did in Soviet times.

I don’t think you considered the point of this post carefully or fairly before commenting on it.

The tennis circuit is invaded by the Russian Red Army. You just have to count the number of Russians playing in the top 100 and you will know what I am talking about. This is like setting a cat amongst the pigeons and this post is a result of it. Nothing surprising.

Swamping the draw with players of inferior quality may boost Russia’s ego, but it’s highly detrimental to the sport’s fan base.

Right now, the last two Russian women left in the Wimbledon draw are playing a quarterfinal match against each other (the only reason a Russian woman will reach the semis) and it is a ridiculous, non-competitive rout. Ten games have been played so far and Petrova has won only two. It costs a fortune to buy a ticket to see a QF match at Wimbledon, and nobody would pay it willingly to watch such an inferior match with such lackluster players.

Your anti-russian intents have become so bitter that it is starting to have negative impact on people. While I also don’t endorse the leftist and socialist views of the erstwhile USSR (and they might still be having residues of it), but it doesn’t mean that you should draw even sports into it.
Maria is not just popular because of her looks, she plays well. Upsets happen to everyone.

Plays well? Document your claim. The whole point of my post was to point out how illusory your claim is. Sharapova is wildly overrated and a huge disappointment almost every time she steps on the court. Her past is littered with humiliating losses against much lower-ranked players.

Just because you don’t share my critical view of Russia doesn’t make your view correct. Seems to me you adopt exactly the same view towards me that you accuse me of adopting towards Russia. You want me to give Russia some compliments for the good things it does? OK, great. That’s your opinion. But where are your compliments of me? You merely express 100% rejection of my post, and that makes you nothing but a giant hypocrite.

In my view, you are only helping Russia to rationalize, and therefore continue, its failure. What Russia needs is confrontation, change and reform.

Or maybe you are content with Russian men on average not living to see age 60 and the Russian population halving by the middle of this century? Maybe you don’t mind if Russia dies off entirely?

I’m not surprised to hear you say that!

You obviously AGREE with this one:

That says America is the worst country in the world. You have no problem with THAT bias, since you AGREE with it, right? I certainly don’t find any comment of yours on that post challenging the author’s bias.

You are obviously not a tennis fan, or you would know that Sharapova’s grand slam titles were due to freak good luck and are not legitimate. She has never won a tournament while ranked #1, no Russian woman ever has. The only reason she won Wimbledon is that she was saved in the middle of a brutal thrashing at the hands of Lindsey Davenport by a sudden rain storm.

Having said that, you also appear ignorant of the fact that Sharapova lived most of her life in the US and learned her game there. She never spends any time in Russia at all, so she’s hardly ”Russian.”

I think it’s QUITE clear. You only object to ”bias” when you don’t AGREE with it. You have no problem with America being trashed, you just don’t like it when Russia is on the receiving end. That’s hypocrisy, pure and simple, and makes your claims about ”bias” seem silly.

Was Gandhi ”biased” against British rule of India? I guess so, because he would listen to no argument about it being a good thing and demanded freedom. But I think that kind of bias is just fine. In fact, essential!

Here’s another fact for you to chew on, instead of your emotions and feelings: In the year after Sharapova won Wimbledon, she made the earliest exit from the tournament by the reigning champion IN THE TOURNAMENT’S HISTORY.

Like many Russians, it seems you too prefer illusion to reality. It’s comforting, to be sure, but only for a little while. Then reality comes, just as it came for the USSR and will come for Russia.

But it seems that you, like many Russians, don’t really care about the country’s future. I, however, do care quite a lot.

This is pathetic.

I didn’t presume to contribute to ”our” understanding of Russia, I was saying that your article doesn’t contribute because of how biased it is. Now if I follow your logic, I in fact do contribute — by recognizing your presumed contribution as biased and unhelpful — doing a weeding out in a way.

You say that Russia getting destroyed by Spain is bad, then you are dreaming. If you admit that there is no comparison between Graf and Sharapova then your attempt to analogize between them is simply stupid. Graf has a championn’s record to excuse her lapse, Sharapova doesn’t. Graf played some of the most thrilling and entertaining tennis in history, Sharapova has never generated one single epic match, and she’s the only Russian to ever win a grand slam event by beating a non-Russian in the finals and the only Russian ever to be #1. This post is not about Sharapova herself but about the fact that Russian sport is a wildly overrated failure in drastic need of reform. So you agree that some are plagiarized and borrowed from other writers (of repute)? Hmmm... refreshing to see some confession from a compulsive liar although by indirect speech.

No, I’m talking about the few posts of mine that are just links to news stories, like Julie’s are.

You’re an amazingly illiterate idiot.

--->>>Tennis isn’t about T&A. Fans don’t pay money to see skin at a sports event, they play to see epic matches. Sharapova never delivers.

Or her opponents cannot produce quality tennis to make an epic match out of it when she is in her deadly forms? Well, she loses as well. But this argument is nonsense.

God.. is there anything left to say? Lol.. This was supposed to be an article which analysed why Russians are losing in sports (If they really are/were) But since the author of this post is well known for his/her opinions, It now is a fight.. Kim, I have a feeling you actually love Russia..

You’re right, and I’ve said so many times. I think if Russia reformed it could dominate in sports and democracy. But Russians show no inclination to do so, therefore I try to help them. A lot more than many others are trying to do!

A pall of silence, depression and fear has descended upon poor Kim now. She talks of poo being yummy like an excreta eater.

Cousin Denis Khakimov is away in Poland for an event. Before going he told me that he has concrete evidence that an Instablogs writer from America with a distinct distaste for Russia featured in 2 Girls 1 Cup. Since I have no evidence I don't want to invite a libel yet in a US court against a Russian having typed something in an Indian website.

Too dangerous isn't it?

@ Jitaditya :-

Kim says; "Plays well? Document your claim. The whole point of my post was to point out how illusory your claim is. Sharapova is wildly overrated and a huge disappointment almost every time she steps on the court. Her past is littered with humiliating losses against much lower-ranked players."

I say the WTA ranking system is rigged and only those players sponsored by the oligarchs mysteriously reach the top of the rankings. Can't you understand this simple thing? Are you stupid? Rankings and grand slam, WTA tour titles mean nothing. Nothing at all. Only corruption and intimidation mean something.

If not for bribery and threats Sharapova would not have been amongst the top 500 in the WTA rankings. Kim has a valid point. Believe her. If you don't better do now.

Seems Kim has made another account to show extra support...:D...

Or if you are a real person still keep restraints when you are writing....top 500 in the WTA rankings!!!...Do you really have players worth noting below 100-150...?

MARAT:

I’ve gone out of my way to have a dialogue with commenters, the vast majority of writers would simply ignore them.

You, sir, are a major mental case.

I didn’t raise the subject of ”poo” other commenters did, yet you ignore that, and you make no substantive comment on the post itself.

Typical Russian idiot.

I don't think so. His profile is still very much active in Instablogs and enjoys the status of a star member as this star joker enjoys here. Check it out for yourself here.

Then it can be you creating a different profile with a different name ”Kim” just to post such things for fun....

Anyways, your previous comment was another assassination of logic...

Kim, since you are a buffoon who amuses people by her ridiculous behaviour, I have to tell you something clearly. This is also an attempt to show the readers what exactly you are. You call people idiots, stupids etc. But your brain is incapable of accepting the fact that every member who participates here is not a writer. They come from various walks of life.

When you say something like I have just written three posts and got just one comment in those, you are unfailing exhibiting your shallow arrogance. Did you hear the adage - Empty vessels sound more? This is exactly what you are. To be a member of Instablogs, one doesn't necessarily have to be a writer. Of course, you are not a writer yourself. You are a ranter who thinks she knows it all.

Writers like you are bought and sold in kilograms in the markets. Just imagine the number of people - kids and adults alike - who can write an essay in this world and you would find yourself to be just one of them.

Kim probably did not notice that there is a ”trash” button alongside the comments and stars.....She should find out how many have trashed her articles...
As a matter of fact I have trashed most of hers....

The entire conduct of Kim Zigfeld since the time she started writing here exhibits total depravity that shocks our conscience. She has not even spared a young champion tennis superstar attacking her personally and posting highly objectionable pictures showing a completely perverse mindset. She has not even taken into account the champ's age or her worldwide fan following into consideration.

It is high time that we stop reacting to whatever she writes thus depriving her of the attention she constantly seeks with her buffoonery on the web.
