Annals of Neo-Soviet hypocrisy

What galls is how together with America we defeated Hitler, and how we sympathized when Bin Laden hit them. But they go ahead and scare kids with Communists. These people have no shame.

Those are the words of Russian Communist Party member Victor Petrov, quoted in a story reported last week about the Russian reaction to the new Indiana Jones movie. It seems Mr. Petrov is miffed because the movie depicts Russians as being the evil enemies of freedom and democracy during the Cold War. Apparently, he thinks we should just forget about all that now, notwithstanding the fact that Russia is ruled by a proud KGB spy.

Interesting, isn’t it? Suddenly now, when Russia wants to attack Indy, we’ve become the country who “together” with Russia “defeated Hitler.” One would like to ask Mr. Petrov where he got that information, because it certainly wasn’t from a Russian history book. Try as you may, you will not find one that gives us any credit at all for defeating Hitler, which according to such texts was 100% the work of valiant Russians. America and the West just came along for the ride.

This is neo-Soviet hypocrisy displayed at its most stomach-wrenching. We’re Russia’s ally when it’s convenient, and its mortal enemy the rest of the time. Who do these Russians think they are fooling, anyway?

An encyclopedia-length treatise would be necessary to chronicle the subject of Russian hypocrisy.

Take foreign policy. How is it possible for Russian dictator Vladimir Putin to visit France and declare that America is a “frightening monster” and lecture the French president about his own people, saying “this is in the nature of French people, they don’t want their country tied down, and any French leader will have to respect that.” What would Putin say if George Bush went to Warsaw and called Russia a “frightening monster”? What would he say if Bush gave a lecture to Dimitry Medvedev in St. Petersburg about what the people of Russia really want from their leaders? How dare Putin demand that the U.S. stay out of Russian affairs and stop leading NATO expansion even as he provokes the U.S. at every conceivable opportunity in the most incendiary and unstatesmanlike manner he can think of?

Do you dare to imagine, dear reader — do you dare — how Vladimir Putin would have reacted in 2001 if, during the height of the second Chechnya war, NATO had announced it would send European troops into Chechnya to repair a railroad connection? Can you imagine how Putin would have shrieked and screamed about the violation of Russian sovereignty? Given that, how does Putin justify giving exactly such an order in regard to Georgia? Simply put, he can’t: but that doesn’t stop him from doing it anyway, just as his Soviet ancestors did.

Or take the issue of Russian “patriotism.” If Russians love their country so much, why is it necessary to bribe Russian athletes to perform their best at the summer Olympics in Bejing? If Russians are full of desire to serve their nation, why is it necessary to bribe Russian parents to have babies? If Vladimir Putin is so popular and Russians so overflowing with affection and respect for their country and their countrymen, why can’t Putin simply ask for these things to happen?

The reason, of course, is hypocrisy. Because there’s no such thing in Russia as “patriotism” or selfless love of country these days. Instead, there’s just virulent hatred of outsiders that some mistake for patriotism. There’s no widespread support for Putin, just as there wasn’t for communism, only jury-rigged elections and lies. When you’re working in a factory for $1.86 an hour, a wage that isn’t even being paid, forcing you on a hunger strike to collect it, and when (as we reported in an editorial earlier this week) you know that your young son will be involuntarily drafted into the army and subjected to brutal, barbaric hazing rituals that may well lead him to suicide, it’s hard to love your country much.

And there’s nothing wrong with that lack of patriotism, it’s logical. What’s not logical is to pretend otherwise, to act as if such love is present when it isn’t, to live in a world of self-delusion and hypocrisy. That’s the world of the USSR, the world that destroyed a superpower.

And Russians are doing it all over again. Guess they didn’t get it wrong enough the first time to satisfy them.

Russians who truly love their country, like Oleg Kozlovsky and Yulia Latynina, are doing all they can to warn it away from the precipice towards which it is hurtling. They risk their lives (and, like Anna Politkovskaya, give their lives) for their cause. They do not utter empty rhetoric about patriotism, they let their actions speak for themselves. Meanwhile, cloaking themselves in rhetoric, Russia’s true enemies toil away in the corridors of power, risking and suffering nothing, sleeping on golden beds. Russians claim to love their country, but they elevate their enemies from the KGB to positions of authority and respect and show nothing but contempt for their true heroes — as they have always done, from the time of Pushkin through the time of Solzhenitsyn right up to the present day.

And meanwhile, Russians stand around looking at each other in confusion, wondering why the country keeps denigrating and dissolving before their eyes.

And so it goes with the tragedy that is Russia.

Russia is looking for its lost clout, but power and prestige once lost is lost for ever. Putin tried his level best but instead turned into a dictator and knowingly or unknowingly, put russia in the old USSR shoes. With all wrong going in Russia - corruption in Army, state's callous attitude towards, ppl and justice denied to the suffers shows russia is not advancing but going back to old dark USSR days. Russia has got only one potential weapon to dictate Europe its terms, the natural sources. As long as oil and gas sources are providing Russia the vital oxygen, they will rise. The moment they will run short of these sources, all their clout will end. but till then, Europe has to wait.

Russia or USA, none are much different from each other. The American political leaders are no different from their Russian counterparts - whether it is the Russian atrocity in Chechnya or the US invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan. If USA threatens Iran and N Korea with imminent attacks for developing nuclear reactors than Russia threatens to cut the gas supplies to the former Soviet States. It is the clash of two powers for global supremacy.

It seems you are drinking Southern Comfort laced with acid again. Whenever you do you write the way you have. Stick to vodka. That will keep you sane. LOL.

Forget it and just amuse yourself. Don't you realize that Kim is deliberately writing such crap to gain attention? The only way someone who is an all gas and no substance can attract attention is by taking nonsense.

Just watched the French Open. Ivanovic won against Safina. It was a great game. A Serbian nationalist defeated a neo-Soviet nationalist in a Western tennis Grand Slam even in the heart of Western Europe. We must just raise a toast tonight. Serbia and Russia are cousins and together standing tall against the imperialist warmongers trying to militarily surround us. The day is not far when we will beat the shit out of USA in Europe.

Hostile foreign policy? Russia routinely flies NUCLEAR BOMBERS near America so that fighter jets have to be scrambled to ward them off. America NEVER does that to Russia. Did you read this post at all before commenting?

Did you ever ask a UKRAINIAN or GEORGIAN or ESTONIAN how they feel about Russian foreign policy?

Your remarks are very narrow-minded and ignorant.

It is interesting to be dubbed as narrow-minded and ignorant if I hold different opinion.America is dishonest and unfriendly in encircling Russia by getting large number of ex-east european countries into NATO.After the end of communist rule and the cold war america should have followed a more cordial policy so as not to force the new russian govts. to follow the same old soviet era policy.

It has nothing to do with your opinion being ”different” it has to do with your opinion being totally divorced from facts and reality and failing to reflect a fair reading of what I wrote.

Ukrainians, Georgians and Estonians all see Russia as ”dishonest, unfriendly and encircling” and you choose to ignore that fact.

Russia stands alone, with no allies as America has in NATO. You are spewing propaganda just like they did in Soviet times, and that dishonesty destroyed the USSR.

Your remarks are just as one-sided as you accuse the US of being. It’s sad you can’t see that.

The people of Serbia just overwhelmingly voted to reject Russia and join Europe. It was in all the papers, kind of strange that you missed it. You really should read a bit more before expressing your views or else you will embarrass yourself.

Safina was beaten in easy straight sets, a totally lame performance, and neither Russia’s #1 nor #2 players made it to the finals.

Please stop using crude profanity in the manner of a cheap street thug. If you don’t, I’ll have your comments banned from this website.

You seem to have great deal of difficulty telling the truth — or else you are simply illiterate. I didn’t accuse you of propaganda, I accused you of INACCURACY and HYPOCRISY. You can compliment Russia as one-sidedly as you like but you must be ACCURATE and you can’t then attack others for being one sided.

I ”propagandize” against Putin the same way Gandhi propagandized against the British rule of India, because it is evil and doesn’t have a good side. But my ”propaganda” is ACCURATE and based entirely on facts. Your gibberish is totally detached from reality, unsourced, unspecific and therefore worthless.

By the way, in Putin’s Russia the average man doesn’t reach the age of 60 and up to 1 million are lost from the population each year. I see that as an emergency that demands immediate action. You, apparently, are content to see it continue. For me, that means you despise the people of Russia.

Hey you clown KIM:

Can you really ban my comments from this website? Do you own this website? Are you a capital investor? What is your status quo? How do you plan to do it? By threatening to stop writing bullcrap here? It will be good for all of us. Go ahead and try it. As far as profanity is concerned you are the worst of all. All the best for a resounding success in this.

Even your own countrymen laugh at you here. Some of the regular authors too find you abhorring. Can't you see? You have not only made yourself a laughing stock of this site but also made yourself look like the town derelict who chases teasing kids with a stick.

Man, I have never seen a more pathetic writer than you and an even more pitiful human being. Shame on you.

This delusional and deranged so-called analist who once upon a time wrote a post called - Annals of Neo-Soviet Hypocrisy (the fixation is obvious, isn't it?) really thinks that if US fighter jets do not scramble to ward of the hostile Russian bombers, they would drop those nuclear bombs on American targets obliterating the country. LOL

Anyone who believes such ridiculous stuff must be out of his minds and need to see a shrink immediately.

The author is obviously in dire need of psychiatric counseling. What do you say?

The reality that Russia has colonized USA escaped my notice. Sorry about that. I should have known that while Gandhi was right fighting against the British for freedom, Kim is also right fighting against Putin's Russia for freedom.

The difference perhaps is that Britain physically occupied India and ruled it while Putin's Russia rules the minds and thoughts of the Americans like Kim, and are struggling to emancipate themselves from this 'occupation' and (fantasy sado-masochistic) 'oppression'.

As Eugene Ivanov in one of his posts wrote, the fixation may be sexual.

Very difficult to get out of. Now whether the analist is a bloke or a bird is a different story altogether. It is no secret that Putin is a gay icon as well.

The difficulty with you is your failure to understand the fact that I am not supporting putin rather my feeling is that Russia has been cornered even after the break up of Soviet Union by America to the extend that the unofficial cold war still continues.

Show me where and I will tender an apology.

I used to think that Editors at least understand the English language? Probably I was wrong all these while.

But most importantly, I used to think that Editors are people who have the temprament to work with others, to moderate debate and to use civilized language. How wrong I have been all my life!

Just so you know... it is not editors that make any site what it is... it is the contributors. If an editor chases out the contributors, the editor will have nothing to edit.

Good luck, Editor.

I AM a contributor. In fact, any member of this wonderful and lively site can be a contributor. It just needs popular votes and it would make it to the homepage.

If I am not writing doesn't mean that I can't write. KIM doesn't even know this and claims that it is an editor. Give me a little time and I shall give you insights right from the heart of Russia and bring video and other interviews from the common Russian.

I shall also make sure that not just the rosy side of Russia is presented. I am no fan of Putin either. But for Kim and the likes I am a KGB man, a man from a much feared organization that now doesn't exist.

I am a masters degree holder in medicine (pathology), studied with hundreds of foreigners in People's Friendship University of Russia in Moscow. I am not a practicing medico. I am a traveler and worked as an English interpreter for business houses and, well, in the Kremlin briefly too.

I might be a bit - what you can term as - enthusiastic. But, by no figment of imagination I am a believer in the old guard and the old system.

Though, I won't take upon a guy like Kim directly as she is unintelligent, I shall be writing from my POV.

You compare with the Mahatma? You are mad sister, take your rhetoric elsewhere. Mahatma and you? You fighting Russian oppression and colonisation of your homeland? How can you compare yourself with the Mahatma??????????!!!!!!!!!!

However in true Gandhian style I forgive you sister hoping the rest of my great nation, incidentally the Greatest Country in the Planet Earth with unprecedented diverse history, culture and tolerance.

Sorry.

Kim, the Mahatma said that we must not drink alcohol and I suspect you do and start writing or commenting. You use profanity, threats and the kind of language Bapu would have not condoned.

Please spare him. He is my idol just like the hundreds of millions in India and all throughout the world.

Kim (sister) and Rudolf (brother) and Denis (my twin) ----

Please stop fighting. India is the world's largest and greatest democracy, the world's foremost peace preacher, and a country where life imprisonment means just 14 years in prison and death penalty, though valid is exercised, in once in two decades.

As the citizen of the world's greatest nation --- democracy with nuclear power with a respectable space agency despite American sanctions... and a country that can be described as a collage of many, many countries with varied and diverse cultures and religion, the world's largest food producer and the 2nd largest quality doctor and engineer producing country I have a right to ask you that.

When an Indian speaks, you must stop and listen.

@ Kim,

Lets get some things straight.

First, no one bans no one on Instablogs... only the community does.

Second, as far as the standings go, You are in no way superior to Denis, or for that matter anyone who contributes on this site.

Third, I suppose being a writer you should have the tact and ability to support your article by some sensible comments (in case of debates), but you are behaving like a high school dropout.

Fourth, Instablogs has witnessed some articles by you and some comments by Denis... and if any sensible person tries to compare both, Denis would win hands down for his originality and for his ability to safeguard his written words in a more sensible way.

Last, lashing out at those who do not agree with you or labeling them as illiterate or narrow-minded or a cheap street thug IS NOT THE RIGHT WAY TO WIN A DEBATE. You should have substance in your comments, not warnings or threats for community members!!

I have no wish to enter into any kind of ”debate” with a person who makes pornographic, sexist threats of this kind (he has made MANY many other such statements, including frequent use of profanity), and I would think you would be more aware of the potential liability consequences for Instablogs of publicly supporting such statements. However, you don’t make reference to this statement in your comment, so perhaps you are unaware of it. Therefore I offer you the opportunity to retract your statement and properly censure Denis for this outrageous conduct.

Otherwise you are adopting his words and bear equal responsibility for them, as you should well know. If you endorse the use of profanity on this blog then the matter is quite simple: I’ll instantly resign and you will not need to worry about me any longer. Do you allow the use of profanity? Please confirm.

I appreciate your effort in bringing that comment to my notice, however, as I had said, the community is the best to deal with such things and that comment got deleted by the community editors because of too many negative ratings by the community members. Hence, you can be assured that such comments will not be tolerated by the Community, irrespective of the person who pens them.

However, as far as your offer to me for an opportunity to retract my statement goes, I suggest you go through my comment once again, and you will accept your folly.

Me retracting my statement would happen only if you take back all those comments, wherein you have lashed out at all those community members who do not share the same frame of mind, in the most childish and unethical manner...which includes threatening to ban a community member.

My comment was a piece of advice for you, but unfortunately, you skipped the substance of the comment it seems.

Further, I would advice you to go through each of your comment pertaining to this article, and you will notice that the language used by you is no more attractive or different than what Denis has used...

According to you, Rudolf is illiterate and pathologically unable to tell the truth and Arif’s comments are totally one-sided. But not on a single occasion have you successfully presented enough facts to support your article and divert their minds.

This highlights your inability to deal with the questions hurled at you, which should never be a case with someone who claims to have a good knowledge and grip on this particular issue.

Anyway, don’t forget that each member of this community has his own view on different issues.... and each writer should have the tact and ability to defend his or her articles without resorting to the type of words you generally use in your comments.

Finally, it all sums up in that single statement that I gave you earlier,

”You should have substance in your comments.”
