Everything Old is New Again! As if the world didn’t already have enough proof that Russia’s proud KGB spy ruler, Vladimir Putin, intends to return his nation to the days of cold war and totalitarianism, next month something will happen in Russia’s famous Red Square in Moscow that hasn’t happened in nearly two decades.

Tanks will roll through. On little cat feet.

Reuters reports that Putin has reinstituted the Soviet-era tradition of holding a military parade through Red Square (where the Lenin mausoleum is still proudly on display) on “May Day” (May 9th), complete with tanks and missiles. Putin’s tanks, though, will be “fitted with rubber pads to protect the cobble stones on Red Square.” Over 100 of them will be on the move.

Neo-Soviet moves continue in the halls of government as well.Reuters also relates the rumor that Putin (who will become Prime Minister in May after his so-called successor, the sycophant Dimitri Medvedev, becomes “president”) intends to seize personal control of Russia’s local government systems. Reuters states: “Early in his presidency, Putin created seven superdistricts led by the presidential envoys, who are charged with making sure the regions in each district obeyed federal law. [The Russian newspaper] Vedomosti cited unidentified United Russia officials and a source in one ministry as saying that the role of the presidential envoys to the seven federal districts should now be economic and that they should answer to the government, which Putin is to lead as prime minister. Sources confirmed that a reform within the Kremlin administration was being considered, Vedomosti said.”

So, first Putin obliterated the independence of local government by decreeing that local officials like governors would be appointed by the Kremlin rather than elected. Then Putin created a supervisory body to dominate and control the local leaders, accountable directly to the Kremlin. Next, he remains in government as his own “successor’s” prime minister, making it impossible for that successor to be an independent leader. And finally, just in case that successor gets any funny ideas about actually running the country, he is packing a key political body up in his suitcase and taking it with him to the prime ministry.

The totalitarian buildup continues apace in the commercial sector as well. The Moscow Times reports:

Russian Railways has expressed an interest in bidding for the huge Udokan copper field in Siberia. This is another example of how the government’s economic policy is increasingly shifting from free-market reforms to the creation of gigantic, state-controlled “national champions.” It would appear that the goal of Russian Railways is to build another state-controlled behemoth a la Gazprom, which, in the absence of much-needed cost controls, has also been allowed to acquire a mind-boggling number of noncore businesses in such sectors as telecommunication satellites, television, farming and medical clinics.

Putin will do via the prime ministry what he once did in the presidency. Russia will do through corporatism what it once did through Communism. The Russian shell game goes on, with zero real reform and hence zero prospects for real progress. Vladimir Putin’s KGB rule over Russia is a national catastrophe, one in which the people of Russia have been willing and mindless collaborators, a disaster that is unprecedented in world history.

Russia is again on the way of becoming military superpower, all credit goes to Vladimir Putin. He transformed a country, which was claiming to be benign and peaceful, in the universal military conscription. Bad news for United states' policymakers, tough to stop Putin who is busy in disregarding the rights of citizens in Russia.

Let the United states deal with Putin, when US can destabilized the whole middle east region and fueled the price of crude oil, it can disintegrate Russia once again. Putin is a daydreamer champ next US government would show him the Power of United states.

@ Kim, I am sorry to say that we should think twice before considering Putin's capitalist regime as a 'neo-Soviet' regime. I remember how Putin urged US citizens to vote for Bush in last presidential election in US. I return Bush had praised Putin's 'anti-terrorism' policies in the incidents of the Moscow theatre Siege and the Belsan school. Both the leaders need each other to survive in international politics and national politics as well.

Agreed that a Neo-Soviet Russian policy is emerging even at international platform too. After Fidel Castro, Putin is trying hard to create new Cuba in Venezuela. He had already provided warplanes and assault rifles some years back to use against destabilize Bolivia. Russia has been blamed for providing nuclear technology to North Korea. The other power bloc is in making secretly.

Putin is always a danger for Americans because with Putin whether it's 'pro-Russian' or 'anti-Western, both have same meaning. Putin is certainly not in America's interest. This is also true that still there are several other hardcore Soviet generals who dream to nuke United states off from world's map.

Yes and Putin has even given the indication to the world in January this year by saying Russia would not hesitate to be the first country to use nuclear weapons in battle against any other country, isn't it horrible for all peace-loving countries.

Let him do what he wants to do to bring back glorious days of Soviet Union. What is bad to you might be glorious to Russians. The Soviet Union's legacy has different beautiful examples, which are considered to be some of the best highlights of 20th century architecture in the world.

HIDAYAT:

I don’t consider Putin’s regime to be capitalist. There is far too much nationalization going on, and the #1 capitalist Mikhail Khodorkovsky has been sent to prison. That’s not capitalism.

George Bush is ancient history! Have you heard John McCain call for Russia’s ouster from the G-8? Bush made a total mess of U.S. foreign policy, but I have high hopes that McCain will clean it up, and Clinton and Obama have both also been harshly critical of Putin.

Russia is buzzing the U.S. with strategic bombers, the U.S. isn’t doing the same to Russia. Russia is marching tanks through Red Square and electing KGB spies president. And then Russia is ”shocked, shocked” when the U.S. and NATO seek to expand. That’s as neo-Soviet as you can get!

Matter of grave concern indeed as Putin is removing democratic bodies like locally elected governors and replacing them with Kremlin appointees. Russia can afford to start the Soviet era parades because it has oil money to burn.

I do however support Russia's move to assert state-owned companies into the commercial sector primarily because of 2 reasons -

a) Will provide much needed stable employment to Russians and bring the state-owned companies from the red.
b) Keep off the concerns of the oligarchs from lucrative Russian ventures inside Russia that would fatten them even further.

the idea behind resurrecting the USSR's may day parade is perhaps to induce some pride and nationalism in common russians today who are facing hopeless situations and do not have anything to rejoice at these days. also, the west's continuous cornering of russia through forging NATO alliances with countries at russia's backside is also making russia to show that it is still a great power. this lack of show of strength and discipline actually proved to be russia's undoing in the global arena when the west started taking it for granted. this is very bad news for europe. very bad.

I fully support and endorse what Putin is doing in Russia. Russians may be a great people but they are completely immature to take wise political decisions because they never had the opportunity to do so in their history unlike the Westerners. If a true democracy without checks and balances is allowed to happen then there would be chaos and anarchy in Russia. Critical state and foreign affairs decisions will remain in state of stalemate and there would be no progress and corruption would shoot through the roof.

By doing what he is doing, Putin is disciplining the Russians who has gone berserk politically and also in the world front emerging a counterbalance to USA which is the call of the hour. We cannot let the USA to do whatever it feels like in the absence of another great power. If the Soviet Union remained then there would have been no war in the gulf and Palestinians would have been much better off.

Do you want Putin to resign and go in retirement? Who would rule Russia then? Would the leader be strong enough to counter U.S. moves across its borders? Would the leader be strong enough to root out corruption? Would the leader be strong enough to be able to put Russia back where it belongs? The answer is 'no'. Putin is a leader who comes once in a generation. He has all the qualities needed to lead and run a great country like Russia. Russians are very proud to have someone like him as their leader.

Your remark that Russians have been mindless collaborators to their own misery by supporting Putin is highly offensive. We are no fools. We know what we are doing and we know how uneasy you people in the West are feeling.

The Red Square parade is one of the world's most spectacular parades. I can't wait to see it in TV again with Putin taking salute and waving the crowds from the balcony along with other leaders and military generals.

Every nation has its own way of doing things. Every leader is accountable to his actions. Whatever Putin is up to is his discretion as the highest leader of Russia. If the Russians want change in their country, then they should act on it.

We can only give our own opinions, but the real people who know best about Russia will be its people.

DENIS:

Your comment is very bizarre. You complain that my words offend you, then you brag that Russians are happy to offend the West with their tanks and missiles. Your country is buzzing mine with strategic bombers, we are not doing that to you. If you are proud of your militarism, that is your business. But you cannot expect the United States to accept it.

They said Stalin was a great leader. But he destroyed the USSR, and I believe Putin will do the same to Russia.

Putin has done nothing to deal with Russia’s social problems. Just like Stalin, he is sacrificing the Russian people on the alter of imperialism. Russia will pay a heavy price for that.

Russia is buzzing the West with strategic bombers? Don't be ridiculous. USA has more strategic bombers than Russia and they are Russia specific. And even if we are buzzing you with strategic bombers why do you think we are doing that? You are instigating Russia's neighbors to become our enemies. Why do you want Ukraine and Georgia to join NATO? Forget strategic bombers, you are deploying missiles and missile defense right at Russia's backyard. NATO has eaten deep inside the East right at Russia's borders. Is this not provocation enough?

You are entitled to your biased and opinionated writing. I reject your article as political rhetoric that is devoid of any real and credible analysis. You failed to discuss why is Russia asserting itself suddenly in the global political scene.

Ridiculous? What’s ridiculous is that yo don’t even read the news before making your comments.

There is not one single report of America or Britain using strategic bombers to threaten Russia in this way.

Russia’s proud KGB spy ruler is provoking the world into a new cold war, and you justify him. Here in the U.S. we routinely criticize our leaders, but in Russia you only justify. The USSR was destroyed this way, and the same will happen to Russia if you are not careful.

KIM:

First let me tell you that Russia merely resumed the bomber sorties after suspending them for over a decade. Why? The answer to this question is with me as I believe is you too. But you have chosen to conveniently deviate from the real bone of contention between the West and Russia. Who is provoking whom?

The United States is aggressively pursuing the installation of missile defense system in Poland and the Czech Republic. Bush openly called for Ukraine's inclusion in NATO. Georgia, a rogue anti-Russia country harboring terrorists and bandits engaged in anti-Russia activities is suddenly the blue-eyed boy of Uncle Sam.

It is laughable to agree with the arguments USA is giving for installing MDS in Poland and the Czech Republic. It is not the fear of Iran or North Korea's missiles passing over from Eastern Europe to hit Britain or other NATO bases. This very thought is fantastic. You too know about it.

Russia is being surrounded and griped from all sides like a python squeezes its victims. You cannot expect Russia to turn a blind eye on such serious and immediate threat.

Undermining Russia's high seat on world geopolitical affairs, especially Europe will prove to be disastrous for USA and its European allies.

Now coming back to the news article links you have sent. Please don't insinuate that common Russians like me are not aware of what is happening around the world especially concerning Russia. I have traveled all over the world and briefly worked as an English interpreter to many Western businessmen and diplomats. You are not the only person in the world who is keeping track of Russian affairs.

Talking about Russian bombers buzzing Western (military) interests, I would like to say that it is perfectly normal. Both sides do it. Russian activities are conspicuous because Russia had the goodness (or the naivety, or the economical incapability) to suspend them after the collapse of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War. US and NATO naval vessels and subs routinely snoop Russian activities in the Barents Sea and in the far east near Japan with high-tech surveillance gadgets. Snooping activities have increased in the Central Asian region and in Russia's western borders.

You must first seek the answers for Russia's current posturing before making statements.

Your hypocrisy is truly breathtaking. If America were buzzing Russian targets with nuclear bombers, Russians would be running wild in the streets and attacking the U.S. Embassy in full force.

Russia stands alone, totally without allies, provoking a new cold war — maybe even a hot one — just as the USSR did.

It’s so very sad. Those who cannot remember history are doomed to repeat it.

You are talking of history now. OK then, here is a history lesson for you.

On May 1, 1960 an incident happened that has left the USA red-faced in front of the world with its exalted president caught lying with his pants down. The incident is none other than what the world knows as the 1960 U-2 incident. The American cover-up and subsequent exposure made the American president run with his tail tucked between his legs from the Paris Summit.

I am laughing hard now. In trying to justify your arguments you are making an complete ass of yourself. The world is watching this, so please think and reply. Don't talk about history. :-)

Talk about buzzing and snooping, and hostory. HE HE

i don't agree Russia was ever outta the global political scene ever. After the collapse it has only tried to polish its claws to tackle the western might by supporting the rogue states of the world like Iran, NK and China.

Let me answer the question (the bone of contention) here, "who's provoking whom?" It is only after the most dangerous of the world has got the weapons of mass destruction and it is only after the Russian help they were able to do that and it is only after Putin started fiercely criticizing US foreign policy that west started shielding itself from the KGB.

Russia has only tried to bring back the days of Cold war when it was too hot for US to handle but the fine art of parody walks a thin line—you either hit the nail on the head, or totally miss the mark and this time Russia has missed it altogether again with NATO increasingly getting hold of Alliance member states.
