People in Russia are not so hostile to the idea of religion, they respect the religions existing across the globe. The religious quest or religious values in Russia is the same as it was some 15 years back when an atheistic communist ideology controlled the country. Majority of Russian population is still loyal to the traditional Russian Orthodox Church.

The NYT should know that Russia had been under atheist communist rule for decades. Only after the collapse of the Soviet Union did the Russian Orthodox Church could open shop again. By and large Russians have become completely disinterested in religion. Even today only a minority of Russians follow and practice religion. The NYT article is baseless.
